What can I expect in my first therapy session?

During your first session, you’ll step into a welcoming, non-judgmental space where you can share your story at your own pace. While the first session tends to be more administrative, It’s an opportunity for us to get to know each other, understand your needs, and start setting meaningful goals for your therapy journey. The focus is on making sure you feel safe and supported.

How should I prepare for my first visit?
You don’t need to prepare much—just come as you are! However, if you find it helpful, consider bringing a list of any symptoms, concerns, or specific goals you have in mind. And don’t hesitate to ask any questions about the process, your expectations, or what you’d like to achieve through therapy. This is your space to feel heard and understood.

How long does each therapy session last?

Individual therapy sessions typically last 50 minutes. Couples and family sessions may run longer, usually around 60 minutes, to allow for deeper exploration and discussion.

What therapeutic approaches are used?

At Tranquil Minds, therapy is tailored to your unique needs. We use evidence-based approaches such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), Family Systems Therapy, Integrative Christian Counselling (upon the client's request), and trauma-focused therapies. These methods help you develop practical tools for managing emotions, reducing stress, and creating positive changes in your life.

What are the expected outcomes of therapy?

Therapy involves a collaborative effort between the client and the therapist. The more honest you are, the easier the process becomes. While every journey is different, clients often experience better emotional regulation, greater self-awareness, improved stress management, and personal growth. Therapy helps you gain clarity, feel empowered, and navigate challenges with confidence. You’ll have the opportunity to build resilience and take meaningful steps toward a healthier, more balanced life.

Additional Questions

How do I know if I’m ready to start therapy?

If you're asking this question, it might be a sign that you’re ready to explore therapy. Whether you’re feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or simply curious about improving your mental well-being, therapy can help. It’s never too early or too late to take that step for yourself. Trust that feeling unsure is natural—therapy is a journey, and you're not expected to have all the answers before you begin.

Can therapy help if I’m not sure what’s wrong?

Yes! You don’t need to have everything figured out to start therapy. Sometimes, simply feeling “off” or overwhelmed is enough of a reason to seek support. Therapy can help you gain clarity on what’s going on and give you tools to address underlying issues that may not be immediately clear

What if I’m not comfortable talking about certain topics?

Your comfort is a top priority. You’ll never be pressured to talk about anything before you're ready. Therapy moves at your pace, and over time, as trust builds, you may find it easier to discuss difficult topics. It’s perfectly okay to share only what feels comfortable and to take things one step at a time.
